Three weeks of C3 competition are behind us.

Now the pressure starts to rise.

Week 4 of C3 Season 6 brings Rocket League, Overwatch, and Valorant into the portion of the regular season where every result begins to have a much clearer impact on the postseason picture.

The opening weeks give teams an opportunity to establish themselves. Week 4 is traditionally where the race for the C3 LAN begins to feel real.

For the teams at the top, Spartanburg is getting closer.

For everyone chasing them, time is beginning to run out.

“Week 4 has always been one of those points in our season where you start getting a much better idea of who is actually going to be in that LAN conversation,” said Nathan Hedrick, C3 Commissioner. “You’re far enough into the season that the standings are starting to mean something, but there’s still enough time for somebody to completely change their season.”

The Four-Win Benchmark

With seven regular-season matches on the schedule, the number four has historically carried a lot of weight in C3 competition.

Four victories guarantees a team a winning regular-season record, and in past seasons that has typically been enough to either secure a postseason position or leave a program in a very favorable position heading into final tiebreakers.

It is not technically an automatic qualification.

The final standings, strength of the field, and potential tiebreakers can still determine exactly where a team finishes.

But historically, reaching four wins has meant a team can start looking toward the postseason instead of simply fighting to stay alive.

“Four wins is normally where we start feeling pretty confident about somebody’s chances,” Nathan said. “It doesn’t mathematically guarantee anything because every season can play out differently, but historically, if you get to four, you’ve put yourself in a really good position.”

That makes Week 4 especially important for teams entering the week undefeated.

A team sitting at 3-0 has an opportunity to reach that benchmark immediately.

Teams at 2-1 can move within one victory of it.

And the programs currently sitting around the middle of the standings have an opportunity to either join the postseason race or find themselves chasing it for the remainder of the season.

Matches to Watch: Who Can Take Control?

From a viewer's perspective, some of the most important Week 4 matches may not necessarily be between the teams currently sitting at the very top.

The biggest games could come from teams sitting on opposite sides of the postseason picture.

A 3-0 team facing a 2-1 challenger creates immediate stakes.

The undefeated program has an opportunity to reach four wins and move one step closer to securing a LAN position.

The challenger has an opportunity to hand one of the league leaders its first loss while moving to 3-1 themselves.

Those are the types of matches that can reshape the top half of a standings table in a single night.

The same applies further down the standings.

A 1-2 team taking on an undefeated or one-loss opponent could become one of the biggest upset opportunities of the week.

On paper, the favorite may have more to lose.

For the underdog, however, a victory can completely change the outlook of the season.

“This is where I think you’re going to start seeing teams play with a little more urgency,” Nathan said. “If you’re 1-2, you know you probably can’t afford to keep giving matches away. Knocking off a 3-0 team or one of the favorites can be the result that gives you momentum to go win out.”

The Teams Closest to Spartanburg

The clearest teams to watch this week are the programs entering Week 4 with three victories.

A win would move them to 4-0, giving them the historical benchmark that has so often translated into a C3 postseason appearance.

While those teams may not be mathematically locked into a Top 8 position immediately, they would have significant breathing room with three matches remaining.

That changes the conversation.

Instead of worrying about simply reaching the LAN, attention can begin shifting toward playoff seeding and finishing as high in the standings as possible.

Teams entering at 2-1 also have a major opportunity.

Reaching 3-1 keeps them directly behind the leaders and gives them multiple chances over the final three weeks to secure the fourth win that has traditionally been so valuable.

Week 4 could therefore create the first real separation between teams fighting for the top of the standings and those battling around the postseason cutoff.

Upset Season

For teams sitting below .500, Week 4 might be even more important.

A slow start does not necessarily end a season.

But the margin for error becomes significantly smaller.

Teams sitting at 1-2 can still finish 5-2 if they win out.

Even programs facing a difficult opening stretch can suddenly become dangerous if they pick up an unexpected win and carry that confidence into the back half of the schedule.

That makes this one of the best weeks of the season for viewers looking for upsets.

The favorites are trying to lock down their position.

The teams chasing them have very little reason to play conservatively.

“You get to a point where some teams basically have nothing to lose,” Nathan said. “Those can be some of the hardest teams to play. They know they need a big result, so they’re going to come into these matches trying to make something happen.”

One upset can also have an impact well beyond the two teams playing.

When the standings are separated by only one or two matches, a favorite dropping a series can open the door for multiple programs behind them.

Suddenly a race that appeared settled can become crowded again.

The Beginning of the Postseason Race

There will still be three weeks of regular-season competition remaining when Week 4 comes to an end.

Nothing will be completely settled.

But historically, this is where the postseason picture begins moving from speculation to something much more tangible.

Some teams may leave this week feeling like their ticket to Spartanburg is nearly secured.

Others will leave knowing the remainder of their schedule has essentially become a series of must-win matches.

And somewhere along the way, there is likely to be an upset that changes the shape of the standings.

“The first few weeks are about figuring out where everybody stands,” Nathan said. “Week 4 is where teams start realizing exactly what every match means. That's when you start getting that playoff atmosphere before the playoffs are even here.”

Three titles.

Three weeks remaining after this one.

Eight LAN positions available in each field.

And for several programs, Week 4 could determine which direction the rest of their season goes.

The race to Spartanburg is heating up.
